Forge and Haft Your Own Hand Axe
There are few things more satisfying than thrusting a lump of steel into the fire and hammering it into a working hand axe. This class teaches you the traditional smith-and-striker technique — working in small groups to move the hot metal. The day is split into three stages: forging the axe head, heat treating it to harden the cutting edge, and hafting it with an ash handle.
The axe making class is one of our most popular — it is physical, collaborative and deeply satisfying. Experienced forge users can try their hand at something more challenging such as a bearded axe. Re-enactors are also welcome to make blunt fighting axes to period specification.
