TIG welding — Tungsten Inert Gas — is the most refined and precise welding process available to the fabricator. Used in aerospace, motorsport, medical equipment and fine architectural metalwork, TIG produces cleaner, stronger and more controllable welds than any other process. It is also significantly more demanding to learn, requiring both hands and a foot to work simultaneously.

This class gives you a thorough, practical introduction to TIG welding from scratch. You will learn torch setup, tungsten preparation, filler rod technique, foot pedal control and how to read your weld pool — the fundamental skills needed to weld steel, stainless and aluminium. By the end of the day you will have the foundation to continue developing your TIG skills with real confidence.

What's Included

  • TIG welder and all consumables
  • Steel, stainless and aluminium samples
  • Full safety equipment and PPE
  • Tungsten selection and preparation guide
  • Course notes to take home
  • Free refreshments all day

What to Bring

  • Packed lunch
  • Sturdy boots — safety-toe recommended
  • Old natural-fibre clothing (cotton or wool)

The Day Step by Step

  1. Introduction to TIG welding — how it works and why it matters

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need prior welding experience?
No prior experience is needed. The class is designed to be accessible to complete beginners. However, those who have completed our MIG Welding for Beginners class will find the day flows more naturally as they will already understand arc welding fundamentals.
How is TIG different from MIG welding?
MIG welding feeds wire automatically and is relatively forgiving — it is the easiest process to learn. TIG uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode and requires you to add filler rod separately with your other hand, while controlling heat with your foot. It is slower and more demanding, but produces far cleaner and stronger welds with much more control.
Will I weld aluminium on this class?
Yes — the afternoon session includes an introduction to aluminium TIG welding on AC current, which is one of the most useful skills for motorsport and fabrication work. You will understand the difference in technique and settings required.
Should I do MIG welding first?
It is not required, but our Welding for Beginners (MIG) class makes an excellent precursor. Many students do MIG first, then return for TIG once they are comfortable with the basics of arc welding.
What equipment should I buy to continue at home?
The class covers this in detail. We will give you practical guidance on entry-level TIG machines, tungsten grades, filler rods and gas setup — everything you need to know before purchasing your first TIG setup.
